maria is in her "why?" stage. any time i ask her to do anything i hear "why?" it gets pretty tiring. finally, last night i just said, "because i'm in charge." she shook her head and said, "nuh-uh." i nodded and said, "yuh-huh." she said, "no you're not." i said, "who's in charge then?" her reply? she pointed to herself and said, "me." oh, ya. i'm in trouble.

Ha ha. That's funny. Just start doing what Dad did to us. He would ask us, "Why do you keep asking why?" When we would answer, he would follow up with, "Why?" He would keep doing this till we got tired of answering, so we would never want to ask him why a million times for fear of being pestered with why questions as well. Seemed to work well.
I have no idea how to solve the "I'm in charge" problem. That's too funny, but like you said, that's when the trouble starts--when they think they're in charge. Oh, I can't wait to see her all grown up at Thanksgiving. What a crazy little girl.

Yep, Dad still does the "why routine" with me sometimes. : ) Just as a joke though.
A lot of times when I babysit kids they think they're in charge, but basically what I do is just stick firm to what I say, and eventually they get it. Not that I'm the expert of something, but it works for me. It's totally different with your own kids most of the time though.
